IB MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME

IB Middle Years Programme

The IB Middle Years Programme, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, moulding them into lifelong critical and reflective thinkers.

Why the Middle Years Programme?

The programme:

  • Encourages international-mindedness in IB students, starting with a foundation in their own language and culture.
  • Encourages a positive attitude towards learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness, and actively participate in the community.
  • Reflects real life by providing a framework that allows students to see the connections between the subjects and real-life issues.
  • Supports the development of communication and collaboration skills to encourage inquiry, understanding, language acquisition, and student reflection and expression.
  • Emphasises, through the learner profile, the development of a holistic student—physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.
The MYP Curriculum

Students are taught to embrace and understand connections between traditional subjects and the real world so that they become critical and reflective thinkers. Eight subject groups are taught conceptually and contextually based on the areas of exploration of global contexts, creating a framework for learning within and across these subjects:

  • Language acquisition.
  • Language and literature
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Physical and health education
  • Design
MYP Subjects

These subjects are then organised in the curriculum through developmentally appropriate explorations of the six global contexts:

  • Identities and relationships
  • Personal and cultural expression
  • Orientations in space and time
  • Scientific and technical innovation
  • Fairness and development
  • Globalisation and sustainability

SEE THE BIG PICTURE,
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

At Fairview, we are taught to think outside the box and ask the hard questions in order to see the bigger picture. At school, we focus mainly on tasks such as research and group activities, which help build teamwork and communication skills. I have always liked the school because of the studying and teaching methods used, which, in my opinion, are easy to understand.
